Sportsmanship: The One Thing Tom Brady Lacks

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

Hi Smash Fans! Happy Thanksgiving, and in the spirit of being thankful, I wanted to talk about one of the most important traditions in sports: showing thanks to your opponents. If you are playing basketball in grade school or played basketball in grade school, you know after every game, win or lose, you go up to the opposing team in a line and high five each opponent. In professional football, there is a similar tradition. After every game, each team goes to the middle of the field to shake hands and talk to each other. It is a time to show your opponent that you are grateful for them. Without your opponent, you wouldn’t be able to play the sport you love to play. This tradition is something that every NFL player has followed since I could remember. That is, every NFL player except for Tom Brady.

Last Monday was the second time this season that Tom Brady has walked off the field and not gone to talk to the other team. The first time was against the Bears where they lost to Nick Foles. Now, not wanting to talk to Nick Foles is excusable. It is not the classy thing to do. However, Nick Foles and the Eagles ended Tom Brady’s run as the best quarterback in the league and started the end of the Patriots dynasty. So if you don’t want to meet with Nick Foles, it is understandable. It is an unsportsmanlike move, but excusable. Tom Brady is the GOAT after all. We should give him the benefit of the doubt. However, this time there are no excuses.

Tom Brady and Jared Goff have no beef. Tom Brady beat Jared Goff in 2019. There is no real reason Jared Goff should have looked like a headless chicken as he searched for Tom Brady. Tom Brady needed to be the bigger man and get over the fact he lost. Jared Goff was 7 when Brady won his first Superbowl. Brady has been the model of consistent greatness since Goff could remember and to beat him must have been such a great accomplishment and then to not be able to talk to Brady after the game must have been a blow to that memory. What Brady did was not ok.

To every person who wants to say that this isn’t that big of a deal, it is just a handshake after a game: It doesn’t mean that much in the grand scheme of things, there is no real harm in not going to the middle of the field after a game. I ask you how it would feel if that was you in the middle of the field. How disrespected you would feel if this happened to you. Tom Brady not going to the middle of the field shows that he doesn’t respect his opponent enough to give them 5 minutes of his time. He thought so lowly of his opponent that they were not worth his time. That is a horrible way to act, no matter if you are the best player of all time or the worst one. There is no excuse for what Brady did.
